What is Health and Wellness Exactly?

We use the term health and wellness a lot when we talk about our company, but what exactly does it mean? What IS health? What IS wellness? And how does CBD fit in to it all?

By definition:

Health- being of sound mind, body and spirit.

Wellness- the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal.

According to leading experts in psychology, there are 8 Dimensions of Wellness. They are:

  1. Emotional
  2. Environmental
  3. Financial
  4. Intellectual
  5. Occupational
  6. Physical
  7. Social
  8. Spiritual

Over the next 8 weeks we will break down what each of these means and tips on how to maximize your personal wellness in each of these categories. We think this is important because health and wellness doesn't just meanWe will start this week with Emotional Wellness.

Emotional Wellness

Emotional Wellness focuses on self-care, relaxation, stress reduction and the development of inner strength. When channeling into your emotional wellness it is important to make sure you fully process and listen to positive as well as negative emotions.

Have you heard the phrase "You didn't have a bad day, you had a bad 10 minutes that you let ruin your whole day?" This a great example of being able to practice emotional wellness. Being able to let the trivial things that happen to us go when necessary is an important part of emotional healing and overall wellness. 

Being able to process negative emotions related to failure is an extremely important part of emotional health and wellness. This is not to say that you shouldn't get upset, sad or mad. In fact, to be emotionally healthy, you should experience every single of those emotions but do so objectively. Learn from them.

For example: It is important to remember that when you fail, it doesn't reflect that you, as a person, are a failure. One thing we have always found very helpful in times of failure is something that we picked up from our kids Elementary School Mantra. F.A.I.L. stands for First Attempt In Learning. Brilliant.

How can CBD help with Emotional Wellness?

Emotional disorders, such as anxiety and depression, have shown to respond very well to CBD and other cannabinoids. So to answer the question: Can CBD help with anxiety and depression? It has major potential!

CBD works by creating homeostasis or "balance". This is done through the Endocannabinoid System. Each and every person has this system within their bodies. It works by regulating every other system (think cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, exocrine, etc.) in the body to keep it in balance. When the body is in balance it is able to work at its optimal capacity. Think of emotional disorders such as anxiety or depression. These illnesses are caused by a chemical IMBALANCE within the brain. So by allowing our bodies to rebalance themselves, from the inside out with CBD, we are giving our bodies a much greater fighting chance at homeostasis.

These are just a few of many studies showing (with more and more happening all the time) that CBD can help relieve anxiety and depression. 

Does CBD help alleviate anxiety? Does CBD help with depressions? Can CBD help with stress? Can CBD help with mental illnesses?

While the answer to these questions seems to be pointing to yes through studies, CBD is no miracle worker. When used in combination with a healthy lifestyle and healthy tips and tricks for maintaining emotional health, it is important to take a well rounded approach. Check out these tips to help maintain and activate emotional wellness. Especially if you're having a rough day!

Tips for maintaining Emotional Wellness

Try Yoga! Yoga, which focuses on stretching, posing, total body awareness and breathing has been shown to decrease anxiety and depression and help one feel more self aware. This is such an important part of allowing yourself to feel emotions and processing them. It also well known that working out can release endorphins which generally make you happier. Next time you find yourself in a funk you just can't quite shake, head to your local yoga studio!

Get your hair done! Taking care of your outer help is part of taking care of your inner health. Have you ever noticed that when you look your best, you typically feel your best? If getting your hair done isn't your cup of tea, try a hot bath, a facial or get your nails done. When it comes to pampering or self-care, it doesn't have to cost a fortune and is something you and from your own home! Allow yourself the space and time to care for your outward appearance and you'll be amazed at how it makes you feel on the inside.

PAINT! A personal favorite. Are you struggling with coping with something that has recently happened to you? Can't find the words to best express how you're feeling? Grab a paint brush and let your mind flow on an empty canvas. Don't put too much pressure on yourself to make the next Mona Lisa, just chose some colors that best represent how you feel on the inside and let them move across the canvas. When you're all done, take a look at your painting and see if it better reflects how you're feeling on the inside. This is a great way to let your mind wonder and not focus too much on sad or stressful things going on in your life.
