Wellness Wednesday- Environmental
Welcome to part 2 of our 8-week Wednesday Wellness Blog. Last week we discussed the definition of health and wellness and discovered there are 8 dimensions of wellness that have been identified by psychologist in their field. They are:
All of these dimensions make up an overall well and healthy being. Taking time to focus on these individually can help ensure optimal balance throughout your journey to health. We will also discuss how CBD can play a role in each of these dimensions as well.
"Environmental wellness refers to one’s relationship to their surroundings that affect humans’ wellness. It refers to living in harmony with earth by becoming aware of one’s interactions with nature and environment and the impact such interactions have."
This process includes learning about our planet, and examining the ways you are either helping or hurting it and making small adjustments where needed. Not only does it focus on helping your home, in terms of the planet we all inhabit, but it also refers to community involvement. What are you doing to help your community? How can you improve your community?
It is believed, among most experts, that climate change is rapidly approaching, while it is so easy to get caught up in massive global hysteria, it is important to remember this small mantra: "Be the change you want to see in the world". Start with your household, then your community and make sure you are personally living the most environmentally friendly as you can.
How can you help with Environmental Wellness
There are many ways that you can personally help with Enviromental Wellness. As stated above, start in your household, then move to your community! Starting at home can have the biggest impact.
- Follow the four R's: reduce, reuse, recycle, repair.
REDUCE & REUSE- As American's there is one thing we are very guilty of: WASTE! On average, each American wastes 4.4 pounds of trash PER DAY! Think of ways you can reduce personal waste in your home and implement it! You don't have to do a complete overhaul of your entire home just start slow, one by one. Start by eliminating paper towels and use washable cloths instead. Get reusable food storage bags instead of single use plastic. Have you ever been to grandma's house and found that she has stored last nights leftovers in an old tub of Country Crock butter?! That's what I'm talking about. Might as well use those PERFECTLY good pieces of plastic instead of going out and buying more Tupperware!
RECYCLE! In most communities there is way to recycle at no cost! Check your community to see if there is a recycling center a Ripple glass drop off. This is such a quick and easy way to help your environment. Most schools are now recycling, or even composting, so getting the whole family on board should be a breeze! In our home we keep two separate bins in our dining room. One we fill up with glass and the other we fill with paper cardboard and recyclable plastic container.
REPAIR- this is another big one. How many times have we thrown something away because it doesn't work and find ourselves going out and buying another version of the same thing!? Before you chuck something in the trash next time, see if you can repair it yourself? Sometimes it could be as simple as a repair a little tape can fix. Also, talk about a great exercise for your brain!
- Plant a tree!
This may seem like an arbitrary way to give back but think about it this way; Just one mature tree can give off 260 pounds of oxygen a year. One LARGE/mature tree can produce enough oxygen for a family of four each day! WOW! While your little sapling may not look like much now, it will grow and become a vital contributor to our life supply: OXYGEN!
- Last but not least. ENJOY NATURE
We live on a beautiful planet that is full of abundant life. Why not seek it out?! Take a hike on a local trail near you. The App: ALL TRAILS is a great one! Get out into your communities natural wonder and explore. There are findings that show exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to your physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones. Just remember: LEAVE EVERYTHING THE WAY YOU FOUND IT ON THE TRAILS. Do not leave trash behind, do not squish bugs or kill animals. This is their habitat you are in, just enjoy it! You have a much deeper appreciation for the world when you enjoy it yourself.
How can CBD benefit your Environmental Wellness?
So CBD itself doesn't exactly benefit your environmental wellness, but Hemp on the other hand does. Did you know that the hemp plant acts as a soil detoxifier? It's a great rotating crop for farmers to plant to get the soil ready for the next crop but it is also a great way to clean tainted soil.
FUN FACT: Hemp was planted around the nuclear disaster of Chernobyl and was found to clean the soil!*
*This is why we HIGHLY encourage you to make sure your CBD comes from an organic hemp source. Anything that is in the soil will be held in the stalks, stems, leaves and buds of the plant and will come out in your oil. Yuck!
While planting hemp still requires a permit, there are many ways you can support the growing hemp industry! Seek out products made of hemp. Hemp as over 30,000 uses including every day thing like clothing, dog toys, food, CBD, paper etc. And hemp is much better for the environment than most of its counter parts. For example, one acre of hemp can produce the same amount of paper as 4.1 acres of trees! Talk about saving the Earth! It also doesn't require near the amount of water and energy to manufacture like cotton does when making clothes.
Taking small steps is key when you're focusing on Environmental wellness but it most certainly can be done! What are some other ways you have focused on your own Environmental Health and Wellness? We love to hear your feedback so please leave us a comment below!
