Chiropractic 101 and CBD's role in health


What if I told you that your body contained a superpower that could be tapped into at any time to create and sustain health as you age. Would that interest you?


Today’s health landscape is murky and oftentimes very confusing for individuals without a background in human biology or science in general. We are inundated with television advertisements for short-term quick fixes that leave us in the same place they found us: in pain. We are in need of true healing practices that can break the patterns established through years of living life.

My name is Dr. Zach Jaskinia, Owner and Lead Chiropractor at Cave Chiropractic in Shawnee, KS. My business is built around Chiropractic, but founded in health. My passion is to facilitate the healing process in my clients, allowing them to express their full potential and live the life of their dreams. 

 

What is Chiropractic?


Chiropractic is a truly amazing healing modality that utilizes the strength and adaptability of the brain and nerve system to heal the body from the inside-out. An analogy I use in the office to illustrate this idea is that of a computer. Your brain is the hardware supercomputer that controls, organizes and coordinates all of the functions and programs that occur within your body. To get the required information to the rest of the body, it uses the nerve system. 

If this brain-body communication is blocked or hindered in any way, certain programs might be affected. Programs such as:

  • digestion
  • respiration
  • circulation
  • those related to movement
  • or your immune response, just to name a few.

Hindrance to a program means it will not be functioning at an optimal level, and thus dysfunction occurs. Dysfunction that is present for an extended time (or trauma that causes acute stress) will produce symptoms we recognize as pain, or other bodily responses. 

CBD and nervous system

 

After information leaves the brain, it travels down the central nervous system, or spinal cord, and is sent out through peripheral nerves into all tissues of the body; including the muscles, skin, organs, cells, etc. If the brain wants something done (consciously or unconsciously) it needs the nervous system to relay the message. 

Human Superpower?

The superpower I mentioned before is your immune system. When supported adequately, it has the potential of fighting off all would-be invaders and can keep you feeling your best as you age. 

Your immune system is composed of two parts:

  1. innate- this component defends you against pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and fungi by providing a quick response to an invader, slowing its spread.
  2. adaptive- This component is ever evolving and can "remember" how to fight off said pathogens in the event we are exposed to them in the future.

With this rudimentary explanation, one might ascertain that there are ways of fortifying our immune response, or the opposite, hindering its effectiveness. 

Being proactive instead of reactive. 

Healthy self-care strategies have the limitless potential to strengthen our immune system, thus improving its efficiency at defending us when we are at risk. Self-empowerment is the first line of defense when discussing this concept, because the more we know about keeping ourselves healthy, the better equipped we are to provide a substantial response when needed. 


In short, by knowing more about ourselves and healthy lifestyle choices, we can do more to CREATE health. Being proactive instead of reactive. 


The first question I pose to new clients in the office is “what do you know about Chiropractic?” This is important to me for two reasons:

  1. to meet the client where they’re at and build a bridge between our definitions of health.
  2. it provides me with an understanding of why they think they are in the office in the first place.

Nearly all clients know Chiropractors for our ability to adjust bones, specifically the spine, and all know we can help with pain.

Why are CBD and Chiropractic such a great fit?

One aspect that is often lost when discussing this avenue of healthcare, is what happens after a Chiropractor gets you out of pain? The ultimate vision for my office is to be a wellness based-subluxation free space known for healing. Once you get out of pain, the real magic happens.

This time in your journey allows for true healing to occur. The pharmaceutical world of healthcare is unexceptional when it comes to wellness, because it is simply masking symptoms to make you forget about them. This leads to exacerbations of a condition and leaves one susceptible to complications down the road.

When do you recommend using CBD to clients?

This idea specifically is why I recommend CBD products for individuals dealing with uncomfortable symptoms such as

  • musculoskeletal pain
  • digestive complaints,
  • anxiety
  • joint pain
  • headaches, etc.

It is a natural pain remedy that pairs wonderfully with Chiropractic and I personally have experienced profound results for my clients, as well as for my family. 

The Endocannabinoid System

CBD products influence the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which is responsible for homeostasis, or balance within our bodies. Many of the natural effects of Chiropractic are enhanced when using CBD products because of the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD. 

One important aspect of CBD I tout to my clients is it’s bio-availability and safety for your body long term. Unlike many pharmaceuticals, CBD won’t damage your organs if taken responsibly over a long period of time. Pain medication like Tylenol or ibuprofen can impair or damage the normal functioning processes of organs such as your kidneys, liver or stomach, to name just a few. CBD is found naturally in our environment and is healthy to ingest in various forms as you transition from a pain-state to wellness, and beyond.

What is self-care?

Chiropractors adjust the spine as a conduit to the nerve system, relieving joint restrictions and restoring proper nerve flow from brain to body. A major educational component discussed in office is the importance of self-care. By improving joint flexibility, managing stress, eating healthy, drinking water, taking supplements (including CBD), holding healthy relationships, improving strength and function of your musculoskeletal system, getting sufficient sleep, and improving self talk, anyone can improve their health if they find consistency in their practices. 


Do the work and reap the benefits. We are creatures of habit; if you emphasize healthy habits, your life will change for the better. 

Your body: A computer?

To recap our conversation and bring this summary full circle, the internal communication system of your body is coordinated and controlled by your brain, or hardware supercomputer. A chiropractic adjustment acts as a software upgrade to your system to remove disturbances and dysfunction within your brain-body connection, allowing your body to operate in its optimal state. When free of these disturbances, your body has the ability to heal itself and create anew through apoptosis and cell regeneration. 


We can help accelerate this process by utilizing the healing properties of naturally occuring substances like CBD, to relieve pain and help bring balance to our Endocannabinoid system. 


In closing, I implore you to ask yourself the following question: What am I willing to invest to live the life of my dreams?
